The social media beauty cult | DW Documentary
Social media are influencing the way women feel about their own bodies. Young women in particular are constantly being confronted with pictures of beautiful female bodies online – images which have almost always been digitally enhanced.
This documentary take a long and alarming look at young women whose everyday lives are dictated by the search for bodily perfection. The more users click their way through Instagram, Facebook and so on, the greater their dissatisfaction with their own appearance becomes. Hardly anyone can escape the pull of this illusory world, where beauty, fitness and lifestyle count for everything. The consequences an even be fatal: slimming and fitness crazes, eating disorders of all kinds, body shaming and sexism. During her research, filmmaker Jennifer Rezny came across a Canadian study that found that young women’s insecurity has been increased by social media. It feels like almost everyone is trying to present themselves on Instagram in slick filter-processed selfies these days. Despite increasing calls for diversity, the “ideal” female body still dominates the media’s perception of female beauty. Numerous movements and initiatives – even on the part of the fashion and advertising industries themselves – have had little effect. “The female body has always been a carrier of female identity. It’s nothing new for us women to be objectified and sexualised,” says Rezny. “There has also been a great deal of social development, but we are still not where we should be and where we women want to be, in an equal society. And in any case, we live in a meritocratic society, one defined and colored by capitalism, which always has to be optimized and improved. It can never be enough.”

29 Jul 2020I hate social media. It's mostly destructive. It's causing our young people to disconnect from real life. Having facebook and instagram 'friends' not real ones.
It gives bullies a larger and deeper platform. Much easier to troll from behind a keyboard than to someone's face.
I find it's also mostly filled with self obsessed narcissistic braggers, looking for attention they would NEVER get in the real world.
I always compliment my daughters positive personality attributes, like she is kind, brave, caring, intelligent and talented..not her appearance. I think it's much healthier.

29 Jul 2020Heres another issue, with women are now focused on the external so you get beautiful women who are terrible people. Because young women arnt raised to be women with good character.

29 Jul 2020Following "body positive", plus size, and fitness models are the same problem as following thinspo. You are still putting all your mental energy and self-value into your BODY. Don't put your self-value in your body. Period. You have a body, it doesn't matter how it looks. Be balanced, healthy, and enjoy what you love. If you love fitness and it's your job or whatever, then fine. But don't do it to LOOK good, do it because you love it. Don't put all your self-worth into your body is what I think the solution is.

29 Jul 202011:20 Evolution is not about that type of fit. That was a huge misinterpretation of what evolution is about.

29 Jul 2020Working out everyday for a hour and eating healthy is so much better than getting fat and lazy imo.
Humans are designed for work and not laying around.

29 Jul 2020I use Instagram for memes and pictures of my hobbies.
No insta thots or fitness Pages and i unfollow all girls i know irl that only post self centered content.
Its great.
Fuck the insta Beauty Hype, in 10 years we will have depressive Woman because their youth faded and the get uglier.
That fitness girl is days before a competition, thats why she feels like Shit. After the competition she will eat more "normal" and gain back back some fat, then she will feel awesome.

29 Jul 2020I do modeling, one of my portfolios is Instagram. There are countless body shapes I’ve seen within the modeling & sw community, all are valued and appreciated. There are always rude entitled and pathetic people who will belittle or attack out of low self esteem / self love, but there’s literally a type out there for everyone. The biggest thing to remember is being valued & appreciated isn’t the same as being fetishized or objectified, non-consensually. Do what makes you feel happiest and most confident in the end, despite what anyone else thinks or says

29 Jul 2020It's so sad to see how much people are ready to sacrifice just to meet society's beauty standards… and instead of putting all this effort to develop mentally and intellectually, people would rather look up to IG norms and chase marterial things. I hope some day we will wake up from this nightmare in which young generation is taught to appreciate standards rather than individuality and creativity. Thank you for this dicumentary, once again I realized how toxic social media can be.
